Hi,

I'm going to be in Oslo for 2 months this summer on a university fellowship. I'm a golfer and wonder if I can can golf at some of the local clubs. Can I just make a reservation to play or do I have to become a member? What are the fees like?

thanks,

But of course! Oslo is golf friendly for visitors, and you do not have to be a member of any Norwegian club. But you do need an offcial handicap, though, since there is no "pay and play"-courses here yet. (Except for a par 3 course called Ballerud Golfklubb)Most courses around Oslo will welcome you to play during day-time, but in the evening the courses are generally crowded. You will normally have to book a tee-off time, one or two days in advance.

Sorry, I forgot the fees. You may see fees ranging from NOK 250.00 - NOK 650.00. (Some courses are more greedy than others....)

Be prepared to meet some of the strangest golfers you have ever met. Generally Norwegians on the golf course think they are the most important people in the world (even though the size of the entire country is like a larger city) and you must be prepared for a lesson on how to behave on the golf course. Golf could have been more popular sport in Norway if it wasn’t for the old “up-nose” attitude that makes the sport very unpleasant for more relaxed, happy and social people.

You are welcome to come Larvik Golf Club. No "up-nose" people there, well very few atleast. I don't know what MR. Anonomus is talking about, but I bet you've got some "experts" where you com e from too. I welcome you to Norway, and to Larvik Golf Club. It's situated along the coast 2 hours drive south of Oslo. www.larvikgolf.no

Isnt it nice..a foreigner wish to come to our country and have a pleasant stay, and the first thing we do is to tell him how bad the people here are and we behave like angry teenagers on this webforum.
To play Golf in Norway is in 99% of the cases a great experience. Once in a while u can stumble over a local hero with a low handicap and expensive car but the chance is you are just as much likely to meet him in sweden, or germany. Or Usa.

You are welcome to play here in Norway, the fees are mostly ok, but it's often true that you get what you pay for. Have a great stay! :)
