I have never once been asked for my handicap card on any private golf course in the States. Usually if it is private golf course like Pine Valley or Merion then your host is in charge of you and would not invite you to play if he did not know what the standard of your golf was.

I played Merion this year and myself and the host were ten minutes over the recommended time of playing for a two ball and he received a letter from the board!!

Pebble Beach is a public golf course and they usually ask for a handicap certificate or card. So I do not agree with Snabela's generalisation. In fact I would say it is the opposite, that most (high standard) public courses ask for a handicap.

Snabela,

Those courses are not private. Anyone can play those courses. You just have to buy a greenfee or stay at the resort. That is not a private course in the States.

A private course in the States is when you can only get on the course with a member. Most of the US Open courses such as Shinnecock, Merion, Oakmont etc are private and are impossible to get on unless you know someone. Pebble Beach and Bethpage Black are the only two public courses on the US Open rota if I remember correctly.

Private courses in the States are so private that most people have not really heard of them. Pine Valley is ranked number one in the world but I doubt many have heard of it. I do not know anyone from Norway that has played it.

Undrende,

Yes, your 2006 handicap card will be okay. Just explain that the season has not started and you are from Norway. The yanks love Norwegian ;-)

Janne,

If a golf course is private in the States it means it is private. If not they call it semi-private. Pine Valley is so private you cannot even get through the gets without an invite.

Jack Nicklaus was invited to play there one year just after he won the US Open. He arrived in his car with his wife. He was taken onto the course but his wife was entertained by the caddiemaster outside the grounds as she was not invited.

Here is a list of the top 20 'classic' courses of America according to Golfweek:

1. Pine Valley
2. Cypress Point
3. Shinnecock
4. Augusta National
5. Pebble Beach (Public)
6.Oakmont Country Club
7. Merion
8.National Links of America
9.Crystal Downs
10. Pinehurst Resort No.2 (Public if you stay at resort)
11. Fishers Island
12. San Francisco
13.. Prairie Dunes
14. Chicago (not sure if private)
15. Seminole
16. Winged Foot
17. The Garden City Golf Club
18. Los Angeles
19. Oakland Hills
20. The Olympic club

Pebble Beach and Pinehurst are the only ones in this top 20 that you can ring and book a tee time. NONE of the others can you do that. Most private clubs do NOT need money they are made of money.

Janne, I think the 'private' courses you are thinking are more of the new type not the classic style membership but more with homes attached to the course. These are classed as semi-private by Golf Digest.

Fjosok,

Torrey Pines has not had the Open yet...it gets it in 2008 ;-)
