Ganton is probably England's best inland course designed originally by Harry Vardon but has been touched by such greats as MacKenzie and Colt who both classed as the two greatest architects out of Europe.

Woodhall Spa has amazing bunkers that very deep which is unusual for an inland course.

Alwoodley and Moortown have both been designed or redesigned by MacKenzie so you will enjoy those but probably not as much as Ganton.

Har spilt på Ballybunion i Irland (nr 18), og det var en fantastisk links opplevelse. Utrolig fin natur, noen mektige utslag (nr 13?) med strand og hav for en selv :-)

Thank you for the information Niblick.

As I said, I have played Ganton and Woodhall Spa - Hotckin Course before. And found Woodhall Spa some better even if the conditions was better on Ganton when I played them back in 2007.

I am realy looking forward to this journey, because I think I will have better advantageously (?) this time since I have become a better player since last time.

Yes the bunkers at Woodhall Spa was unbelievable!, I remember that I did not got out of one of them!. I also had to play backward in some of them, just to get into play again.

My only problem is that Moortown or Sand Moor don´t let visitors out on course before 12.00 on saturday (12.09) so I probably have to go up to Ilkley course.

Best Regards
Ray

Hi Ray,

When you play Fulford dont forgot to get a picture of yourself by "Langers Tree" on the 17th, or even better climb up, place a ball and try to get it on the green (as Langer did)

Havent played Ilkley, but, just up the road from Sand, Moort, Allwood and the rest, there's Harrogate (Colt/A.MacKenzie), Pannal(Herd/C.MacKenzie) and Rudding Park(Hawtree). all which I found very enjoyable and challenging, none of which has any visitor limitation on weekends (as least not when I played them)

Cheers

Niblick,
Do you know of any other area with a higher density of golf courses than that little area of northeast of Leeds centre?

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=53.863056,-1.504955&spn=0.066408,0.181446&t=h&z=13

9 independent golf courses literaly within walking distance of each other, 4 of which are considered among the top 100 in the England (I've been told that there over 2500 courses in England, so that's quite a feat). Ok, fair enough Leeds has a population of 700 thousand (ish) but there are at least 15 other courses in Leeds and close surrounding area.

Interesting footnote to the problems Norwegian course are struggeling with, how come all these courses manage quite well, the members seem to be spending more time at their club. Is the monthly medal, is it the half pint on the 19th, is it the sunday roast?

No that is pretty amazing. There are many places like that in Britain but not quite as dense as that or all independent of each other.

St. Andrews town has 7 courses run by the Trust, 2 courses at St. Andrews Bay hotel and one course run by the Old Course hotel and then there is Kingsbarns. So that is 11 courses within 20 minutes of each other.

The you have East Lothian with 3 or 4 courses at Gullane, Muirfield, 2 at Archerfield Links and then 2 at North Berwick. So that is there.

I have no idea how many there are in Glasgow but we have worked on two already and have put in a bid to remodel one.

The Liverpool area has loads as well, Birkdale, Lytham St. Annes, Royal Liverpool, Southport and Ainsdale, Wallasey, West Lancs, Formby, Hillside and all of them Championship Links courses. That does not include the small clubs in between. I think the Liverpool to Blackpool run is probably on of the best trips you can have for first rate golf.

Hello guys!,

I will try to remember the "Langers tree"!.
And I will check out that other courses you mention, I did know about them but Ilkley is higher ranked.

I don´t know if you is aware of this webpage:
http://www.uk-golfmaps.com/

It seems that it is down just now ... But is good to use when you want to get a overview over golf courses in UK.

There will not be so many chess move Yorkie becaus there is a CC congress organized by ICCF and I will pick up my Olympic GOLD medal.
ICCF is paying 50% of my trip so that is good!.

Whe you talk about golf area; Stavanger have to be one of the best area in Norway; Stavanger, Sola, Bærheim and Solastranden.
Just 15 min drive from one to they others.

I can inform you that I have already booked my flight to Malaga in March ... So Puerto Banus, Sotogrande and Santana here I come!.

Cheers!

Agreed Niblick, the golf coast should be on everyones itinerary, at least I have it on my wishlist.

http://www.englandsgolfcoast.com/

Fife, East Lothian and Ayrshire/Glasgow does indeed have numerous fabulous course, but then again, the annual trek of golf tourists to these parts are pretty massive.

I mean how many have you ever heard planning a golf trip and they go "Lets go to Leeds" (apart from sensible Ray that is:)

You mention North Berwick, I still get goosebumps when I think of it. Question to you as a professional, what would you think the reaction would be if a course opened today and incorporated The Pit, Perfection, Redan and The gate? That stretch from the 13th to the 16th must be among the most peculiar and fantastic holes in the world, but on a modern course? Interesting thought

Ray, those rankings those rankings:)

According to the Peugot guide, Ilkley as a 17 and Pannal a 16, Harrogate a 15. I tend to refer to this site when Im planning trips

http://www.top100golfcourses.co.uk/

And according to this Ilkley is 136th in the UK and Pannal 147th. Im pretty sure that Ilkley is a fab course, my tip was more in terms of accessability.

Congrats on the gold medal, never gotten myself one of those as far as I can remember:) (unless you count the gold stars at pre-school.)

I have put Stavanger on my itinerary for next year as I've only played Sola in that area so far. I'll let you know when, and maybe you can act as my forecaddy;)

Actually The Redan is probably the most copied Par 3 in the world on many of those top 100 courses.

If I designed a stretch of holes like that I would not get a contract again!!

North Berwick is probably the best Matchplay, have fun with the lads, course in the world.

Will let you know for sure, enjoy your trip and travel safely mate.

Niblick,

My point exactly, that stretch is peculiar to say the least, in todays world it's all about shaping and creating picture perfect (and challenging) holes, nothing wrong with that tho. Im a simple soul, I like the quirkyness of courses like North Berwick and Elie equally with the splendor of courses like Hills and Atlungstad, however Im glad we still have the North Berwicks of this world.
